Tijuana officially celebrated its 124th anniversary on Thursday, July 11, 2013. In addition to cake and a happy birthday song, the city will now enjoy over a month of celebrations, including family-friendly activities and events that can be enjoyed by citizens on both sides of the border.
Last Thursday night, a cake was cut, just as it is for virtually every birthday party. For this occasion, however, the cake was five feet wide. The special guests in charge of cutting this enormous celebratory dessert included Mr. Obed Silva, Secretary of Government, Ms. Elsa Arnaiz Rosas, director of the Institute for Art and Culture, Ms. Carolina Bustamante, president of the Board of Municipal DIF, and Richard Fitch, president of United for Tijuana AC.
“We are pleased to continue this celebration which 24 years ago was promoted by the civil association ‘United for Tijuana’, headed by Richard Fitch, in a place so traditional such as the Teniente Guerrero Park, and also with families who decades ago arrived to this city and have helped form it into what Tijuana is today, “said Institute for Art and Culture director Elsa Arnaiz Rosas.
The anniversary ceremony was topped off at City Hall by the mayor, Carlos Bustamante, who pledged that Tijuana would continue to grow with the support of all its residents.
Throughout the next few weekends, there will be several festivals showcasing the food, drinks, and culture of the region, including a free concert headlined by renowned Mexican singer Gloria Trevi. The festivities will finally come to a close on August 18th.
