Ironman Los Cabos, the famous triathlon, is coming to Los Cabos in March 2013. The event will take place on March 17th, 2012, but there will be activities and training for the athletes starting on the 14th and awards ceremonies and closing parties on the 18th. Nearly 1,500 athletes from more than 50 countries are expected to participate. United States is the country that have more participants, with a total of 545 athletes, followed by Mexico with 430, Argentina 55, Canada 51, Costa Rica 25, Australia 20 and Brazil 19 to name a few.
The competition offers a professional prize purse of $75,000 USD and 50 coveted age-group slots to the 2013 Ironman World Championship, taking place on October 12, 2013.
The swimming competition will take place at Palmilla Beach, the perfect setting for the one lap, rectangular shaped course. The water temperature during the month of March is around 72ºF (22ºC). The time limit will be 2:20 hours after the race starts, those still in the water after this time will be disqualified, and cannot continue the triathlon.
The biking segment will start on the paved highway above the Palmilla Beach towards the toll road to San Jose Airport, a 90km course that athletes will circle twice and end in the center of San Jose del Cabo. Average temperature will be around 68ºF (20ºC). For the bike segment the time limit is 10:30 hours after the race start.
The run will be mostly flat, over a 3 lap, 14km course, around the streets of downtown San Jose, with the finish line in front of City Hall. The same rules apply to the running segment with a time limit of 17 hours after the race starts.
The registration for the Ironman Los Cabos begins on March 21st at 12:00pm central time.
