G20 in Los Cabos

The G20, a yearly meeting of the world’s strongest as well as the emerging economies, will take place in Los Cabos in 2012.

The G20 has 20 members, 19 countries plus the European Union: Germany, Canada, The United States, France, Italy, Japan, The United Kingdom, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Brasil, China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Mexicom South Africa, Tureky, Australia and The European Union. Spain will also be represented being a permanent guest of the organization. Also invited to the 2012 G20 meeting are Chile, Colombia, Sweden, Benin and Cambodia.

The summit’s meetings will be held at the new Convention Center in San Jose del Cabo to discuss economic and financial issues such as the reform of international financial institutions, financial supervision and regulation, and the international monetary system. The members will also touch upon non-financial issues but ones that, nonetheless, have an impact on international financial instability such as energy, development, job creation, food security and corruption.

The G2o is expected to bring over 12,000 visitors to the Los Cabos area that weekend. American president Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon are also on the guest list.

The official organizers of the G-20 held a security informational meeting on June 1st. The following are the most important notes from the meeting
1. The toll road from/to the airport in San Jose will be closed June 15-19. The road will be open only to those transporting delegates. Anyone who needs to go to the airport will have to use the old route through San Jose del Cabo
 2. The Convention Center will be open for the G 20 summit
 3. The only beaches that will be restricted, from June 15th to the 19th, are those in front of Hotel Barcelo’, Hotel El Faro and those in front of the 7 hotels lodging presidents and prime ministers (One and Only Palmilla, Marquis, Fiesta Americana, Sheraton, Esperanza, Ventanas al Paraiso, and Westin).
 4. Highest concentration of Security will be in the area from the Convention Center (where the main summit takes place) to Hotel Barcelo’ (where negotiations of vice-ministers of finance and sherpas will take place) and Hotel El Faro (headquarter of the International Press Center).  Less affected by security will be: Hilton Hotel (headquarter of the B20 – Business 20) in San Jose del Cabo and the Cultural Pavilion in Cabo San Lucas where the NGOs will be discussing
 5. Staff working at hotels where meeting are being held or Heads or State are lodging will have to register at the Accreditation Center inside Hotel Maya in San Jose
 6. It is recommended you carry official identification with you at all times when in Cabo from June 15th onward
 7. From June 15th to the 20th there will be various evening events, concerts, movie screenings, dancing and art exhibits at the Cultural Pavilion located in downtown Cabo. All events are open to the public and are free.
 8. The Cabo San Lucas Bay and Port will remain open as usual until further notice.
 9. All schools, hospitals and businesses will remain open, unless a decision to close is made by the actual institution
 10. Maritime traffic will be restricted in front of the Hotel Barcelo’ and El Faro in San Jose del Cabo and those lodging the heads of State only
11. All private jets transporting guests not attending the G20 will have to use the Cabo San Lucas FBO (MMLS)
 12. Be prepared to wait in traffic, so leave at least 30-45 min before your meetings or appointments, there will possibly be various check points along the highway
 14. Don’t forget to smile, this is an unprecedented event in our destination
