New Director of Golf Named at Cabo del Sol

Enhanced golf experience and course improvements also planned at the celebrated 36-hole facility

Los Cabos, Mexico – Erik Evans, a veteran of the Los Cabos golf scene, has been named Director of Golf at Cabo del Sol, the landmark 36-hole facility renowned for its Ocean Course (Jack Nicklaus) and Desert Course (Tom Weiskopf).

A native of Philadelphia, Evans, 46, has worked previously at some of the finest and most revered clubs in the world, including Los Angeles Country Club. Locally, Evans worked as Director of Golf at Diamante from 2009 – 2012; and as Head Professional at Querencia from 2012 – 2016. He left the Vaquero Club in Westlake, Tex. to take the reins at Cabo del Sol earlier this month.

“I’m very excited to be here knowing the developer is committed to investing in the facility and enhancing the golf experience,” Evans said. While praising the Ocean Course as a prominent ‘Top 100 in the World’ venue, he believes the Desert Course has untapped potential.

“In addition to refurbishing the halfway house, we have several maintenance improvement programs scheduled to be performed this summer on the Desert Course,” Evans explained. “Given the quality of the design, the Desert Course is underperforming in the Cabo market. It deserves more rounds and a bigger market share. We’re going to ensure that for the avid golfer, the Desert Course is a must-play experience at Cabo del Sol and a perfect counterpart to the Ocean Course.”

Opened in 2001, the Desert Course marked Tom Weiskopf’s architectural debut in Latin America. Renowned for his masterful creations in desert environments, Weiskopf routed the 7,049-yard layout high above the Ocean Course, with each hole offering a panoramic view of the Sea of Cortes. A strategic, well-balanced design, the Desert Course rambles across rock-strewn, cactus-covered mountain foothills and skirts canyon-like barrancas. Broad fairways ensure an enjoyable experience for golfers at all ability levels. Putting surfaces feature long slopes, subtle rolls and distinctive tiers. Large-scale bunkers with dramatic capes and bays signpost the landing areas and defend the greens.  Shot-for-shot, the Desert Course ranks among the finest and most versatile tests of golf in Los Cabos.

In addition to installing GPS units in the golf carts, Evans said service levels will be enhanced to improve the overall experience at Cabo del Sol. “To meet seasonal demand, we will add several golf professionals to the staff who will serve as instructors and goodwill ambassadors,” he stated. “There’s a lot of excitement here now. We’re fully focused on guest service and equally focused on building relationships with the local community, including concierges, developers and real estate brokers. We’ll also be producing a newsletter to keep fans of Cabo del Sol up to date with the latest developments.”

The Jack Nicklaus designed Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol is regularly rated as one of the 100 best golf courses in the world.

As for the Ocean Course, the top-rated international venue on Jack Nicklaus’s extensive resume, Evans believes the layout is “the jewel of Los Cabos.”

“We’re going to improve what’s already great on the Ocean Course, starting with the taco experience at the turn” he stated.  “It’s a fantastic layout, and the number of holes stretched along the seashore is very rare for a resort golf course. It’s very playable, and it does what great courses do: It rewards good shots and penalizes poor ones. For me, the Ocean Course weaves together the region’s desert, mountain and ocean elements like no other course in Los Cabos.”

Evans has relocated to Los Cabos with his wife, Alexia, a native of Sonora, Mexico; and Sienna, their three-year-old daughter.
