The Market at Quivira Debuts at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach

New Culinary Hall Features an Array of Enticing Eateries

Cabo San Lucas – The Market at Quivira, a unique culinary concept unlike any other in Los Cabos, has been unveiled at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort and has quickly established itself as a popular “foodie” destination.

Inspired by modern food halls found in major U.S. and European cities, including the Plaza Hotel in New York and Harrods in London, The Market, featuring an enticing array of eateries and a handsome central bar, has redefined the region’s gastronomic “food hall” experience. The spacious 15,000-square-meter facility, built at a cost of $5.5 million USD, offers open communal seating for more than 450 diners of all ages.  

The space was completely remodeled “to provide more eclectic dining options for our hotel guests,” said Enrique Gandara, Pueblo Bonito’s V.P. of Sales and Marketing. He added that guest patronage of the food hall has far exceeded expectations, with more than 2,000 diners passing through The Market per day during the holidays.

The Market welcomes Pueblo Bonito resort guests to enjoy its array of food and beverage options with their all-inclusive plans. Only the chocolate shop is not included in the all-inclusive program.

“Everyone loves the new food hall,” Gandara stated. The Market’s open-floor complex, designed to please all types of palates, features several distinctive restaurants as well as a coffee shop and a bar. These include:

  • 1950’s Diner– This classic American-style diner, accented by red-and-chrome décor, offers hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, milkshakes, homemade desserts and excellent breakfasts.
  • El Asiatico– Asian cuisine is well-represented by a wide range of dishes, from traditional miso soup and Szechuan-style shrimps to delectable dumplings and other examples of Asian street food.
  • La Creperia & La Heladeria – In addition to 24 flavors of homemade ice cream and gelato, La Creperia is turning out the best crepes (sweet or savory) in Los Cabos.
  • El Deli – This bustling New York-style deli features the finest hot, cold or toasted sandwiches utilizing fresh-baked breads as well as selected meats, cheeses and condiments.

Creative and tech agency Narrative_ helms the branding and advertising, while Infinium Spirits is managing the sales and marketing of the unique spirit that joins the two renowned beverages.  

“With Santo you get that smooth, full agave, rich tequila flavor with a touch of smoky-sweetness that you can only find with Mezcal – perfect for sipping,” said Levine.

Santo is crafted by third generation master distiller, Juan Eduardo Nunez, from the famed distillery El Viejito in Jalisco, Mexico, and is being distributed in select markets nationwide, launching in Las Vegas, California, New York, Texas and Florida in the first quarter of 2017.

Tasting Notes: 
Santo’s intense agave aroma mixes with an earthy, light smokiness with a hint of herbs. The initial bite is mellow and fades gently, while the full taste and finish elicits the intricate agave flavor and herbal complexity layered with gentle smoke, slight floral fruitiness and low saltiness. Land’s End Region Forges New Alliances with Spanish Travel Industry

The Los Cabos Tourism Board wraps its participation in FITUR, together with the Los Cabos Hotel Association, FITUES and the State Tourism Secretary in one of the largest and most important tourism conferences in the world, which took place from January 18-22 in Madrid, Spain. Among the tourism board’s achievements at the 37th edition of this conference was an agreement with the Spanish Tourism Board to promote travel from Spain to the entire Baja California Sur region with their unique experiences.

“We have a mandate from our esteemed hotel partners to generate visitation from every corner of the world,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director, Los Cabos Tourism. “We have more than 2,500 hotel rooms opening in 2017 and our participation in FITUR is one of the many ways we are ensuring that there is a robust pipeline of visitors to the destination.”

Los Cabos Tourism conducted a total of 32 meetings with a variety of travel companies including El Corte Inglés, Barceló, Logitravel Group and TUI. Meetings with Aeroméxico and Iberia, which offer the most flights from Europe to Mexico, focused on promoting Los Cabos to other European markets and making Spain a hub for tourists to Mexico.

Highlighting the destination’s luxury offerings, meetings were held with Nuba, CATAI and Luxo Travel. Meetings were also held with GTA from the U.K., SilverJet from the Netherlands, and Canadian airlines Sunwing, Transat and WestJet.

The tourism board’s participation at the conference resulted in at least 3 partnerships with the Spanish market to host trade events and welcome two familiarization trips for tour operators and media.

Cabo del Sol Upgrades World-Class Ocean Course for 2017 Season

Landmark 36-hole facility also improves its underrated Desert Course

Latin America’s premier destination for world-class golf is found at the tip of the Baja peninsula in Los Cabos. Now boasting 15 courses laid out by several of the game’s leading designers, Los Cabos commands a unique ocean-mountain-desert ecosystem found nowhere else in the hemisphere.

The golf course credited with placing Los Cabos squarely on the international golf map is the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, a brilliant Jack Nicklaus Signature design debuted in 1994. This scintillating layout, described by Nicklaus as occupying “the best piece of golf property I’ve ever seen,” stretches for more than a mile across a stunning desert landscape backdropped by rugged 6,000-foot mountains. Often described as the ‘Pebble Beach of the Baja,’ the 7,111-yard, par-72 layout has seven holes touching a coastline marked by craggy granite outcrops and sun-drenched beaches washed by the Sea of Cortes. The Ocean Course is ranked among the Top 100 courses in the world by both Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine.

Cabo del Sol Upgrades World-Class Ocean Course for 2017 Season

Not content to rest on its laurels, Cabo del Sol completed a major bunker restoration late last fall to bring the layout’s strategic elements into sharper focus.  The project was directed by Jim Lipe, the original Ocean Course design associate for Jack Nicklaus.

“The impetus for the bunker renovation was to replace the contaminated sand with new, quality sand,” said Greg Tallman, Cabo del Sol’s director of golf.  “From there we began to study old photos, noting that the original forms and shapes had changed rather significantly over the 20-plus years the Ocean Course has been open. We were fortunate to have Jim Lipe review each hole with an eye toward eliminating several bunkers while also contemplating new ones that we had discussed through the years. The final result is a considerably upgraded facility with an overall aesthetic befitting such a great golf course.”  

Once the old sand was removed from the layout’s bunkers, the bunker contours, which had flattened over time, were restored or reshaped. In addition, the bays and floors of the hazards were returned to their original concave shapes. Original course drawings and photos were referenced during the reconstruction process to achieve accuracy.

Taking a less-is-more approach, Lipe removed 19 bunkers and added five new ones. In two instances, bunkers were joined together to form a single sandy hazard. When the shaping was completed, new sand was introduced to all the bunkers, as was new drainage. The net result of the refurbishment: The Ocean Course now has 72 well-placed bunkers, 16 fewer than before the renovation. The bunker reduction accentuates the layout’s clean, flowing lines and majestic ocean views. Lipe noted that the bunkers that were taken out tended to penalize higher handicappers.

“We wanted flashed faces in the bunkers where it was needed for visibility, but overall we eliminated steepness in the bunkers to enhance playability,” Lipe explained. “Taking out superfluous formal bunkers enabled us to bring the desert back into the golf course.” 

In addition to the remedial bunker work, two new ladies’ tees were added late last year. At the 14th hole, a short par 4, the new tee box occupies “a fairer and more attractive location” than previously, according to Tallman. At the spectacular par-4 18th hole, a grand left-to-right dogleg that traces the curve of the rocky, wave-tossed shore, a new seaside ladies tee now presents a more beautiful prospect from the red markers.

A final tweak was made to strengthen the par-5 15th hole, which tumbles downhill from the high point of the course to a broad fairway backdropped by the sparkling Sea of Cortés.  A new back tee has stretched the hole from 530 to 550 yards, while a new bunker in the driving zone, suggested by Nicklaus, is intended to give big hitters pause for thought.

While often overshadowed by the Ocean Course, the Desert Course at Cabo del Sol, a Tom Weiskopf design routed high above the Ocean Course and the Sea of Cortes, is a well-balanced test that takes golfers on a roller-coaster ride across barrancas and through cactus-covered foothills. Shot-for-shot, the Desert Course, opened in 2001, ranks among the finest and most complete tests of golf in Los Cabos.

Following rain and wind from a minor hurricane last fall, all bunkers on the Desert Course were cleaned of debris and later filled with new sand. Two bunkers were removed; two bunkers were converted to large “Baja bunkers,” or waste bunkers. In addition to the post-storm clean-up, an extensive clearing program on the Desert Course restored vast amounts of playable desert areas beside the fairways. The course now offers players a reasonable chance to recover from a wayward shot that departs the fairway.

Cabo del Sol’s magnificent 40,000-square-foot clubhouse serves both the Ocean and Desert courses. This elegant edifice fuses colonial and traditional architecture with modern amenities to create a distinctive Mexican hacienda design. Marked by magnificent arches, rich stone floors and high-beamed ceilings, the clubhouse features indoor and outdoor dining areas, an expansive golf shop, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and picturesque ocean and golf course views from its open-air verandas and landscaped terraces.

Golfers who visit Los Cabos this summer can expect well-conditioned courses, plenty of availability, a friendly Cabo welcome—and deeply discounted green fees. Summer is family vacation time, but it’s also the season that invites golfers to take a swing at bargain rates on a bevy of world-class venues.

For example, at Palmilla Golf Club, recently treated to a $3.5 million renovation, “dynamic pricing” enables players to take advantage of adjusted rates based on demand, availability and other factors. The club offers discounted rates starting at $105 for an 18-hole round at Palmilla, the “Grande Dame” of Los Cabos golf and the first Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course built in Latin America. For an ultra-luxe vacation, the 27-hole facility’s golf packages feature accommodations at One&Only Palmilla, a world-class property ranked in the top 1% by TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Awards.

Summer Golf Deals in Los Cabos

At Quivira Golf Club (pictured above), its Jack Nicklaus-designed course marked by sheer granite cliffs, huge windswept dunes and rolling desert foothills, players are privy to summer rates in two time slots through Sept. 30. Quivira’s mid-morning rate to play a world-class layout with more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos is $267 (11 a.m. to 1:24 p.m.). The twilight fee, available from 1:36 to 3:00 p.m., is $227. Rates include food and refreshments at the club’s four comfort stations. ‘Stay & Play Packages’ at Pueblo Bonito resort properties are available.

All three Questro Golf courses in Los Cabos offer significant seasonal discounts through Oct. 31. Puerto Los Cabos, situated on the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo, boasts a unique composite layout with nine-hole designs by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. (A third nine by Nicklaus is under construction and will open next year). The 18-hole green fee at Puerto Los Cabos is $195. The twilight rate (after 1:30 p.m.) is $135. In addition, dynamic pricing at Puerto Los Cabos brings low season rates down to $115 based on availability. Complimentary refreshments are served at a pair of on-course palapas.

At Cabo Real, centerpiece of a resort development with 3.2 miles of beachfront, an 18-hole green fee of $180 and a twilight rate of $125 after 1:30 p.m. are promoted on the club’s Robert Trent Jones II-designed layout, a superb layout that climbs from the beachfront into steep desert foothills high above the Sea of Cortes.

Ohana Real Estate Investors, LLC (Ohana) announces plans for a Fred Couples Signature Golf Course and Twin Dolphin Golf Club within its development in Los Cabos, Mexico. Fred Couples to Design Twin Dolphin Golf Club in Los Cabos

The new Fred Couples designed Twin Dolphin Golf Club will be set near the scenic shores of Santa Maria Bay in the corridor that connects cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Design and development of the course, which will be the first Fred Couples Signature Golf Course in Los Cabos, has begun with a target opening date in 2018. Couples will work with Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design, the architect of record. “Our aim is to build a world-class course that is unparalleled in Cabo with regard to conservation,” said Alex Hill of Ohana. “The course will utilize a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis desalination plant being built to serve the entire master plan, and we are working with the design team to implement native landscaping and other design elements that will support our conservation efforts.”

o   Margarita Butler – For guests renting poolside cabanas (full or half day), Esperanza offers a dedicated margarita butler who will demonstrate how to make refreshing cocktails choosing from a selection of six flavors including Tamarind-Lime “mezcalita,” ginger-grapefruit, mango-jalapeño and hibiscus-rosemary that guests can pair with salt or chili powder to rim the glass. Poolside amenities will be on hand including sunscreen, Evian mist spray and fresh towels, along with crudités, for a relaxing day of lounging. The margarita butler service is included in the cabana rental fee; each cabana guest receives two complimentary margaritas.

o   Baja Craft Beer Tasting – Esperanza’s tequila and beer expert highlights the best local brews with craft beer tastings at Pesca Ceviche Bar. The experience pairs four artisanal beers from Mexico with an appetizer such as pilsner beer paired with duck-breast crispy tostada, porter beer with Baja shrimp tacos or red lager beer with fish battered tacos. The tasting is $45USD per person and is available from 12-4 p.m.

o   Vintners’ Dinners – During the month of May, Esperanza plans to showcase the great wines of Chihuahua, Mexico through dedicated dinners with Encinillas Winery.
