During the past month, Rosarito Mayor Hugh Torres Chabert has been interview in several US television networks in Baja California’s neighboring city of San Diego, California regarding the improvement of tourist safety in Baja California Norte. Among these television news shows and networks that the Rosarito Mayor was interviewed included FOX Television Channel 6, Channel 39 and Channel 51.
Mayor Hugh further stated that the Baja California cities of Rosarito, Tijuana and Ensenada have been working together to achieve a safe zone for tourists within their cities. Along with the local government of Tijuana, Ensenada and Rosarito, they are also receiving support from Baja California Governor José Guadalupe Osuna Millán and Mexican Republic President Felipe Calderón.
When asked to mention some of the steps and projects being taken in Rosarito to ensure public safety and prevent tourist attacks, Mayor Torres mentioned the creation of a tourism police, added neighborhood patrols and special police trainings are just some of the positive steps they are implementing.
The Mayor of this Baja California city also said that aside from corrupt police officers or criminals pretending to be policemen, there are also some organized criminal groups that are posing as a threat to the security of Baja California Norte. He said that they are dealing both with organized criminal groups and the problem of police corruption in Ensenadana, Tijuana and Rosarito.
