A new animated series would soon be seen on television, specifically shown in children’s programming network Nickelodeon. This said animated show is entitled ‘El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera”. Yes, it is quite obvious from the title and the name of the lead character that this new addition to Nickelodeon’s list of children’s programs would feature Latino cartoon characters and Latino culture.
Many people are already voicing out their approval of El Tigre since it offers Latino children with a program choice that features Latino characters and culture. The creators of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera is a couple named Sandra Equihua and Jorge Gutiérrez said in an interview that as children, they watched cartoon shows that did not have Latino characters whom they can relate with. Because of this, they decided to create an animated children’s television series that would give Latino kids an animated cartoon character they can relate with and possibly look up to.
Over the years, more and more Latino characters and cartoon shows have been created and shown on TV, thus the one sidedness of culture and language on children’s television is starting to diminish. The all-American popular television show for kids known as Sesame Street for instance, added a Latino character to their cast of adorable puppets and mascots. Alongside Ernie, Bert, Big Bird and Cookie Monster can now be seen a Hispanic puppet named Rosita. Mucha Lucha, Dora the Explorer, Go! Diego, Go!, Los Kitos and Handy Manny are just some Hispanic cartoon characters which Manny Rivera of El Tigre would soon be joining on television.
