May heralds the return of some of Baja’s most highly anticipated events, including the 35th anniversary Rosarito to Ensenada 50 Mile Fun Bicycle Ride, and what is now billed as “The Happiest Race on Earth,” the General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000. The origins of former date to 1979, while the latter hearkens back to 1967, when Ed Pearlman and the National Off-Road Racing Association organized the inaugural running of the event that would eventually become famous as the “Baja 1000.” Although that legendary race is now run under the SCORE Banner, NORRA revived the spirit of those bygone days when it restarted the Mexican 1000 as a fun, vintage-style rally race in 2010.

Rosarito:  35th Anniversary Rosarito to Ensenada 50 Mile Fun Bicycle Ride

When:  May 3

Dubbed “The Original Party on Wheels,” the 50 mile fun ride started in 1979, when a group of friends pedaled from Rosarito to Ensenada on a lark. Now a biannual event, the scenic rides are among the highlights of the regional social calendar, and conclude with a Finish Line Fiesta featuring food, drinks, souvenirs, live music, and massages for participants.

Ensenada:  5th Annual General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000

When:  May 10–14

The 5th edition of this classic Baja rally race starts in Ensenada, then courses down the peninsula through El Rosario, Bahía de Los Angeles, San Ignacio, Loreto, and La Paz, before finishing in San José del Cabo. Afterwards, more than a 1000 racers, crew, and guests are expected to attend the “Post Party and Driver’s Awards.”

Cabo San Lucas:  5th Annual Cabo Marine Show

When:  May 15–17

Mexico’s premier maritime exposition returns to Los Cabos for the 5th consecutive year, with some of the biggest names in the boat and water-based recreation industries showcasing their wares on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The three-day expo will also feature art and jewelry vendors, as well as live entertainment.

Cabo San Lucas:  IXth Anniversary White Party at Nikki Beach

When:  May 23

Each year, the Los Cabos smart set dons their most elegant white ensembles to kick off the summer season, with top-shelf drinking and dining, and spirited entertainment from an international cast of talented DJs and flamboyantly costumed energy dancers in a stylish setting overlooking Medano Beach and the Sea of Cortez.

Todos Santos:  3rd Annual Gastrovino Food and Wine Festival

When:  May 23–25

Gastrovino welcomes gourmands and oenophiles for a three-day festival celebrating local culture and cuisine, as well as Baja wines from Valle de Guadalupe. The main event will be held in the Todos Santos town square on May 24th, with food, wine, live music, and a silent auction to benefit local programs for children.
