Fairs, Festivals and Fiestas: July Events in Baja California
Summer is the slow season in Baja California, and the time of year when the event focus traditionally shifts from cultural festivities to water-based activities like fishing, surfing, and diving (with visibility increasing as water temperatures rise). Many of the premier summer events are in fact fishing tournaments, and Los Barriles is home to July’s top sporting competition, the 10th annual East Cape Dorado Shoot Out, with over $125,000 in cash and prizes on the line as teams vie to bring in the biggest dorado (known in some regions of the U.S. as mahi mahi or dolphinfish).
A few cultural and food and wine festivals are on tap this month, however, including the 3rd annual Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival. The Cabo San Lucas luxury resort is bringing in some big name U.S. chefs, and will feature first-class wines from Napa and Guadalupe Valleys, as well as hand-crafted prohibition era cocktails from one of the top mixologists in New York City.
No official dates have been set as yet for the 8th annual Pitahayas Festival in Miraflores – the schedule is dependent on when the cactus fruit is at its ripest – but July visitors to Baja California Sur should keep an eye out for this traditional three-day celebration, which showcases eating, drinking, dancing, and the crowning of the queen of the festival. The star of the show is the antioxidant rich fruit that many consider the secret to the notable longevity of residents of this small town, which is located near Santiago, about an hour’s drive north of San Jose del Cabo.
There are hundreds of local events that can be found on Baja.com. The following represent some of our favorite selections.
