A Guide to some top Baja Sur Activities for Kids
by Chris Sands
Cabo San Lucas may be best known for its romantic resorts and boisterous nightlife, but the Los Cabos area is much more than simply a playground for adults. There are plenty of family-friendly activities and accommodations options here. And La Paz is a great place for families, as well! In fact, in Baja Sur, visiting kids can walk the plank on a pirate ship, swim with dolphins, learn to surf, build seaside sandcastles, and view schools of colorful fish from underwater viewing cabins. Baja‘s biggest theme park is located in Los Cabos, as is a go-kart center, a camel safari, and a natural history museum. Best of all, perhaps, most area resorts feature kids clubs, babysitting services, and other family-oriented amenities that allow parents to relax and enjoy their vacation. And then there are whale watching adventures, family kayaking trips and more that can be enjoyed by big and little, old and young.
Ultimately, the joy of family travel lies in sharing memorable experiences. With that in mind, here is a guide listing a few of our favorite Baja Sur activities for kids — and for their older pals — in Los Cabos and La Paz.
It’s hard to go wrong with Cabo Adventures. Not only does this premier activities company offer everything from rugged outback camel safaris to exhilarating zip-lining, scuba diving, and mountain biking tours, they also operate the perennially popular Cabo Dolphins center. Swimming with these incredible creatures is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for anyone, but it seems to have an almost magical effect on small children. The kids program at Cabo Dolphins includes a meet and greet in shallow water, plenty of dolphin hugs and kisses, plus a ride they will never forget. Don’t forget to visit the photo center. The smiles are priceless.
Surf’s up, little dudes. Teens and pre-teen hipsters will definitely appreciate surf lessons and the beach scene at top spots like Cerritos and Costa Azul. For the younger set, or just the young at heart, Los Cabos adventure purveyor High Tide provides thrilling off-road jeep explorations of scenic East Cape destinations like rustic seaside Cabo Pulmo and the traditional town of Santiago. City tours and San Jose del Cabo’s Art Walk may appeal more to mom and dad, but combination snorkel and tandem kayak trips to Land’s End and Lover’s Beach will engage the entire family. Snorkel pristine sites in Cabo San Lucas Bay, surrounded by schools of colorful fish, and paddle past local landmarks like The Arch and Pelican Rock.
Road trip, anyone? No journey to Baja Sur is complete without a visit to the capital city of La Paz. While you’re there, The Cortez Club is the place to go for family-friendly fun and adventures. This popular watersports company offers a range of seagoing excursions, from snorkeling, diving, and fishing trips to leisurely sailing and kayaking expeditions. Explore the uninhabited islands of Espiritu Santo and Cerralvo, or, from December through April, introduce the kids to the world’s largest marine mammals. The Cortez Club’s whale watching tours deliver up-close and unforgettable looks at migrating blue, grey, and humpback whales. Who knows? If you’re lucky, you might even see a few orcas.
La Paz is also home to Mar y Aventuras, a local Baja company that has been offering active and fun excursions to remote and special areas of the beautiful Baja Peninsula for more than 20 years. On sturdy sea kayaks and pangas, excursions allow guests to experience the abundant nature and wildlife of Baja’s pristine waters. Snorkels and masks bring kiddies and adults into the undersea action! And, at the end of the day, families appreciate the low-cost and centrally located lodging option that is offered by Posada LunaSol in the heart of La Paz.
Every Los Cabos vacation should include a spa day for mom, and some time on the local links for dad. The area’s top resorts take care of the kids while parents have a bit of play time for themselves. At Melia Cabo Real, supervised activities areas are available for toddlers and kids ages four months to twelve years old. Bilingual baby-sitters can also be arranged while mom gets a massage, or dad tees it up at nearby Cabo Real, the world-class Robert Trent Jones II designed course that has hosted two Senior PGA Grand Slam events. Afterwards, safe swimming and premium sandcastle building conditions are on tap at Playa Bledito, the beach that borders the resort.
For a home-away-from-home experience, vacation rentals are a terrific option, especially for larger families. The ranch-style Casa La Calma features four bedrooms and baths, and provides plenty of room for kids to roam. The youngsters can splash around in the pool while mom and dad relax in the jacuzzi and enjoy the spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez. For sustenance, grill up some burgers and hot dogs, or walk over to the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar and have dinner at one of their onsite restaurants. Private chefs are also available, as are babysitting services, and beach, spa, and golf facilities are never more than a stone’s throw away.
