Casa Lereé has become my outpost on the world in these last nine years. The guests who stay in the two garden rooms bring me news of their lives and of the long road down the Baja California peninsula and the view from my windows and the sounds from the streets keep me aware of the mostly quiet life of San Ignacio. From the bookstore window I see a street of dirt once again, after a few years of new asphalt paving. We’ve recently had a few good rains which carried down enough mesa mud to cover modernity completely. We will clean it up eventually.
Sometimes the news hops right into the large garden of Casa Lereé. Through the metal garden grill and under the heavy double parking lot gate have crawled and hopped the recent birthing of toads – sapos — triggered by those same rains, the first time I have seen young one-inchers. Usually it is the three-inch adults who appear all at once, traveling the streets…..destination urgent.
From my windows I also see action at last in the old building called La * del Norte, H. Liú Mindó, closed several years, but always promising and intriguing. Owner Hercilia Ceseña has found someone with the drive to rent it and repair the damage of the years to its old adobe walls and very high ceilings. The new whirlwind is Toni Marcer, a Canadian with her head full of delicious recipes and ideas for a welcoming afternoon and evening restaurant, offering light and complex food.
All I have to do is sit and watch the dust fly out those old double French doors, and then step on over and enjoy! Can’t tell me nothing ever happens in the old pueblo.
